AstraZeneca has agreed to pay $2.5bn to settle a class action lawsuit filed by former Pfizer Inc. and generic drug maker Apotex Inc., which is alleging that the company’s patent on Viagra (sildenafil citrate) “gave misleading and unfair monopoly protection to the blockbuster drugs”.
The settlement, announced yesterday, is expected to help pay for a similar class action against generic drug makers including GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Bayer AG, Merck & Co. and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals USA, which filed their suit on behalf of men who suffered severe sexual adverse events after taking a generic version of Viagra (sildenafil citrate), according to lawyers.
